I texted this photo to my husband. Me: I think Dug is dead. He's been laying on this branch for a LONG time. Not moving. His tail isn't moving, his eyes aren't moving. He looks completely limp. Hubs: I'm working. (Hubs is out of town working in Chicago this week) Me: You don't love Dug as much as I do. Hubs: No, I'm just working. Me: He's still not moving. Hubs: Maybe he's just resting. Me: Squirrels don't rest outside their nest. Do you even know Dug? He's very twitchy and cautious. He comes and he goes. He doesn't lounge on a branch. (rolling eye emoji) Hubs: Does he have a wife? Me: Don't even. Hubs: Maybe he needs a moment to himself? Me: Still not moving. 15 minutes!!!! Me: I whistled out the window, nothing. Hubs: He's probably dead. Me: THAT'S AWFUL don't say that! Hubs: You said you thought he was dead! Me: But I was worried and sad. You aren't sad. Hubs: You want me to be worried and sad? Me: YASSSSS!!! Hubs: Ok. I'm worried and sad. Me: No you are not. You're just saying it to make me feel better. Hubs: It would make you feel better if I were sad? Me: again. YASSSS!!! Me: Still no movement. The wind is blowing his tail and his arms, he's completely limp!!! He's DEAD!! I know it. How do I get a dead squirrel out of the tree so I can bury him!!!!!!!! It's so high!! Ladder? Hubs: Don't you dare get on a ladder to get that squirrel. I'm not kidding. Me: I can't leave him, a hawk will get him and then what will I bury?!! Hubs: Robin. Seriously. Me: I'm serious. Me: It's like 20 minutes. Me: I'm going out and bang on the deck and see if he stirs. Hubs: Ok. Me: He's ALIVE!!!!! I went out on the deck and stomped and waved my arms and yelled garbedly gook and Dug! and he jumped up and ran in his nest!!! He's alive!!! He was sleeping or napping or chilling or something I guess!!! Hubs: The neighbors. Hubs: Now he's dead from a heart attack. Me: Not funny! Hubs: He's going to move. Me: No he loves it here. Hubs: I'm sure he does :/ Me: Get back to work now, thank you for being with me during this difficult time. Hubs: Sure thing babe. (Bonus point if you understand why our squirrel is named Dug.)
